New research published in the “Journal Nature” indicates that ZERO calorie sweeteners alter the population of bacteria in the digestive track and can trigger high blood glucose levels, which can lead to diabetes.

The far is far from conclusive but challenges the accepted wisdom that ZERO calorie sweeteners help overweight people lose weight. This is something which product developers are going to need to understand in the future.

For now, consumers believe that diet soft drinks help them control calorie intake and therefore weight. If this is not so, beverage marketers are going to have a big challenge ahead!
